India threaten boycott of London 2012 Games

The London 2012 Games is under threat of a boycott by the Indian Olympic Association over Dow Chemical's involvement as a sponsor.

Dow has links to the Union Carbide Corporation, which was responsible for the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster that killed thousands of people. As a result, a petition has been drawn up in opposition to Dow's £7 million wrap around the Olympic Stadium.

Athletes past and present have taken part in the petition, which demands that India's sports minister, Ajay Maken, boycotts the Games if Dow's sponsorship remains. A meeting will be held in 10 days' time to discuss the matter.

It is argued that the disaster of '84 still affects the health of people living in the area today. The Indian government is also seeking £1.1 billion from Dow for the victims, and it is argued money going into the sponsorship of the Games could be better used.

London 2012 chairman, Lord Coe, said: "I am satisfied that the ownership, operation and the involvement either at the time of the disaster or at the final settlement was not the responsibility of Dow."

A spokesperson for Dow said: "It is disappointing and misguided that some people are trying to assign blame and responsibility to Dow. Dow acquired the shares of Union Carbide Corporation more than 16 years after the tragedy and 10 years after the settlement agreement - paid by Union Carbide Corporation and Union Carbide India, Limited - was approved by the Indian Supreme Court."
