Miss England 2013 Winner

The Miss England 2013 beauty pageant winner has been announced.

Kirsty Heslewood, aka Miss North London, has been crowned the winner of Miss England 2013. The final round of the competition, which took place in Torquay, Devon, saw the 24-year-old beat 59 other women to win the title.

Kirsty, who lives in Little Hallingbury, Essex, said, “I am so proud and privileged to win Miss England and my directive during my reign will be to show young girls that they can achieve if they put their mind and soul into their ambition.''

Working for the title for three years, Kirsty entered Miss England to help her gain more self-confidence after suffering from selective mutism (an anxiety disorder that prevents children from speaking).

Contestants had to compete in several rounds to get to the final stages, including the beach round and an eco fashion show where they had to create their own 'green' outfit made out of sustainable materials.

Miss Heslewood, who is also a county standard netball player, said that winning Miss Hertfordshire last year and being on stage at the 2012 Miss England final gave her an enormous confidence boost.

"I used to suffer from selective mutism, which is when you can't speak at all," she said.

"I used to have really bad self-esteem and confidence and I took part because I was intrigued and I wanted to build my confidence and I wanted to see what it involved and make friends as well.

"I've realised that I can do things that I don't think I normally can. I'm enjoying doing the out of the ordinary thing. It's been amazing and it has been really good."
