Bollywood becoming friendly with politicians?

Like everything, actor Aamir Khan ensured that his nephew, actor Imran Khan’s wedding reception had a power-packed attendance. But what was unexpected for many was the presence of the supposedly warring Thackerays — Uddhav and Raj.

The two didn’t really cross paths at the function — Raj apparently left just minutes after Uddhav stepped in. However, the fact that they made it a point to oblige a film fraternity do only signals an interesting trend — that of the film brigade extending a hand in friendship to politicos.

It may be recalled that Wake Up Sid and My Name is Khan (MNIK) ran into political controversy last year. While the filmmaker of the former personally tendered an apology, the latter’s release almost got stuck when the film’s hero and co-producer reportedly refused to apologise for a statement apparently not related to the film.

The issues may have got sorted out then, but it is something that no one from the film fraternity would like to repeat, or go through again.

“It pays to have a direct line of communication with both Raj and Uddhav Thackarey. Ask Shah Rukh Khan and he will say that he is friends with both. Even Aamir is now quite close to both the brothers,” says a source close to Aamir.

Not just top actors, even filmmakers like Yash Chopra and Raju Hirani among others have apparently strengthened their bonds with the Thackarey brothers.

“Raju Hirani and Uddhav have interacted on a number of occasions and we hear that he has met with Raj also on a number of times. In some cases, the wives are greater friends than their husbands. But it is true that after the MNIK incident, everybody has realised that nobody can afford not to network with politicians. Now with Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh and others showing the way, it is for certain that Bollywood will try to be closer to politicians,” adds a source.
