Amitabh Bachchan has said he was overwhelmed by the crowds who cheered for him at The Great Gatsby's premiere in New York.

The actor, who stars in the $125 million 3D project, plays Meyer Wolfsheim in the Baz Luhrmann-directed adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald's novel.

Writing on Twitter, Bachchan said of the event: "Back from The Great Gatsby premiere and has to be said... the EFwas the main attraction. Simply superb! American media, fans, security in shock.

"Thank you my ED, and thank you to those that cheered their lungs out. US media thought Leonardo had come, when noise went up."

The legendary star added that the premiere had been a "fantastic experience" and described the red carpet experience as "emotional".

"I really have no words to express my gratitude to all of you that cheered in virtual world, and on the streets of NYC... indebted," he said.
