Google to launch StreetView of 100 Indian monuments

Google India and Archaeological Survey of India on Thursday have partnered to create 360-degree online imagery of 100 most important heritage sites in the country, including the Taj Mahal, Khajuraho, Qutab Minar and Ajanta and Ellora caves.

By helping the ASI create new 360-degree panoramic imagery (3D) of these iconic Indian sites, Google hopes to help make more of India’s heritage accessible to people around the world, and to help preserve India’s unique history for generations to come.

“This is akin to the Google’s Art project … many heritages of India are accessible to very few people when it comes to search. But, now with the help of technology and the Government’s help, these important Indian heritage sites will be available for the world to experience online,” Rajan Anandan, Vice President and Managing Director, Google India, told reporters here.

He said the ASI would approve each heritage site over time as per their call and accordingly Google will bring them online. Google India will start collecting images of the approved sites by ASI from next week and publish them accordingly, he said.

“Through this partnership with Google, we hope to engage more people, both around the world and here in India, in discovering and learning about our country’s rich cultural history,” Chandresh Kumari Katoch, Union Minister of Culture said.
